Static, outdoor, slightly scary

The one that's halfway out and grinning about it

A 35-inch skeleton torso with one hand planted flat in the dirt and the other reaching up, jaw dropped wide. It sits on the ground and reads as a burial that didn't take, which is a different thing than a skeleton lying on a lawn. Belongs at the front of a graveyard scene, angled toward the street, where headlights find the skull first.

The loose hand does the work

The hand on the ground isn't attached to the torso. Set it a step out in front, fingers spread, and the whole thing reads like he's dragging himself forward. Tuck it right against the base and it reads like a prop. Your call, but the first one is why cars slow down.

Grinning, not screaming

The jaw is dropped wide and the eye sockets are solid black, but the face lands closer to a laugh than a threat. Slightly scary is the honest call. That's the difference between a house the little ones skip and one they dare each other to walk past.

Set it and leave it

It's static. Nothing moves, so what you set at dusk is what the last kid sees at the end of the night. Put it where the ground looks disturbed and it holds the pose until you pick it up. Pairs with the rest of The Ground Crew if you want more than one plot coming up.

On the night, and the morning after

Headlights hit the skull first, then the raised hand, then the kids work out where the rest of him is supposed to be. It's the one they walk up to. November first, lift the torso, grab the loose hand, wipe the mud off the finish and both pieces stack in the bin next to whatever else came up this year. That's the whole ritual.
