A shrouded woman that lurches when someone walks up

A 5.9-foot animatronic in a soot-streaked white shroud, black hair hanging over a skull face with lit orange eyes. Walk into her range and she lurches forward, bony hands out. She plugs into 120V and belongs at the edge of the walkway or the bottom of the porch steps, where the sidewalk can see her.

Reads as a ghost from the street

From the sidewalk she is a white figure in a long gown, gray grime down the chest and hem, nothing dripping, and two orange points where the eyes are. The skull face and the open mouth only register once they are close enough to be committed. She sits at slightly scary, the right dose for a street with strollers.

Hands at hip height

The bony fingers reach forward at hip height on her, which puts them right about at face height for the smaller kids. Set her a step or two back from the path so the lurch lands in front of them, not on them.

Wall power, not batteries

Plug-in 120V, so she is still lurching at nine on the 31st when the battery props two houses down have gone quiet. Run an outdoor extension cord along the edge of the bed and pin it down so nobody finds it with a foot in the dark.

On the night, and the morning after

Halloween night she stands at the edge of the walk, eyes lit, and lurches every time a group works up the nerve to pass. The parents stop at the curb; the kids come back twice. On November 1st she unplugs, folds flat into the tote and goes on the garage shelf next to the fog machine, ready for next year.
