What happens when someone walks up?

An infrared sensor picks them up and the piece runs its cycle: four spoken lines over crying and hard, uneven breathing, the arms swing open, both masks come down off the faces, and the eyes and the faces light up green. Then it settles and waits for the next person.

Who are the two of them supposed to be?

A woman who worked at a power plant, and a boy who carried a gas mask to school in his bag because she made him. On the day it all went wrong she left work early to fetch him, so they would see it happen together. What the piece plays is the minute after: the two of them deciding the air is safe again, and reaching up to take the masks off.

How tall are they, and how much room do they need?

The taller figure stands 5 ft 7 in at its highest point, which is adult height on a lawn, and the smaller one comes up to about her chin. They arrive joined on one welded metal frame, so the footprint comes set: pick flat, level ground and give the pair the width of a doorway.

Do they really hold hands?

Yes, and it is the detail people notice from the sidewalk. The two inner hands are joined, which is what makes the pair read as one thing instead of two props standing near each other. It is also why they cannot be spread apart: the join is part of the piece.

Is it too much for a street with small kids?

This one sits at the far end of what we carry. There is no blood, nothing torn and nothing wet, but the faces are sculpted to unsettle and the audio is crying and breathing. We file it as not for little kids. On a street full of strollers, a groundbreaker skeleton does the job without the argument.

Can they stand outside?

They are made for indoor or outdoor use, including a covered porch, which is the setting most people end up choosing because it keeps the adapter and the outlet out of the weather. Bring them in when the weather turns hard, the same as anything with a motor and a speaker in it.

Will the neighbours hear it all night?

There is a volume dial built into the piece, so you set how far it carries before you leave it out. It only speaks when the sensor fires, not on a loop. If you want the opposite, there is an output for an external speaker, which is what people running a full walk-through use.

What does setup and storage look like?

About twenty minutes, and the adapter plugs into a wall outlet with roughly ten feet of cord to reach it. A battery adapter is sold separately if there is no outlet where you want them. The carton has a slide-out tray, so on the first of November everything goes back the way it came.

Two of them for the price of one

I went looking for one animatronic and got a pair. On the lawn they read as a scene, not as a decoration, and that is entirely because there are two of them and they are touching.

The masks are the whole thing

Standing still they just look like two grey figures. Then the sensor catches someone and the arms swing out and both masks come down at once. Nobody on our block was ready for it.

Photos do not prepare you. The tall one is my height, so from the sidewalk it reads as two people standing in the yard until you get close enough to see what they are.

Turn the dial down first

There is a volume control on it and I wish I had found it before the first night, not after. Set it low, walk to the sidewalk, then decide. Ours sits about a third up and carries fine.

Lived on the porch all month

We put them on the covered porch on the first and left them. Rain came through twice and they kept working. The porch also hides the adapter, which is the part I did not think about.

Setup was quick, one frame and a plug. The one thing I would say is measure to your outlet before you pick the spot. Everything went back in the tray in November without a fight.

Fair warning, this is not a friendly skeleton. Small kids on our street go around it. Teenagers came back three times to set it off. Know which street you have before you buy.
